50 People That Nailed Halloween Costumes

Halloween is just around the corner and it’s about that time of the year when we are getting all crazed and creative while pumping those brain cells hard to come up with the coolest costumes. But the good news is that the best inspiration always comes from the things around us.

And from the year we've had so far, it seems like this Halloween will be the party of the century. Think of COVID deniers, anti-vax "Karens" callin’ corporate, a trash bag that represents GOT’s final season, and many more out-of-the-box ideas that have been packed into this prep list by Bored Panda. And even though the costume winner is more or less obvious—Steve Martin, where are you?—we suspect the grey hair paint and plastic mini flies will be flying off the shelves this year.

For more ways to win Halloween this year once and for all, check out our previous posts with killer costumes here, here, and here.

To find out what’s trending this Halloween, Bored Panda reached out to Miranda Enzor, a writer and Halloween lover who runs the blog “Spooky Little Halloween.”

Miranda noticed that these days, more and more people are opting to create their own costumes rather than purchasing costumes from stores. “I haven't been to a ton of stores this season because of the pandemic, but when I've visited... I've noticed a LOT of costumes still hanging around.”

But most Halloween cult classics never go out of fashion, like witches, vampires, and ghosts.

The Halloween blogger said that she’s a huge fan of looking in your own closet for costumes. “It's so easy to pull together your favorite pop culture character from clothing you already own. It also takes off the pressure of having to be screen-perfect.”

She said that as long as you get “that major detail of your character right, you can get ‘close enough’ on the others.”

#7 Mermaid On Wheels

Since becoming a wheelchair user 3 years ago I wanted to dress up as a mermaid, because I figure on land they would use wheelchairs too. Finally got the chance at a Halloween party. It took around 3 hours to do my makeup - my disability affects my fine motor skills so it was a bit tricky! I was happy with how it turned out though and loved being a mermaid for a night.

Miranda lovingly calls Halloween the “misfits' holiday.” She believes that “It's the one holiday each year where everyone fits in. It has no rules—you're free to make your own.”

Most importantly, “You can go creepy and scary, you can go spooky and cute, or you can even just share your love of the fall season if you don't celebrate Halloween.”

That’s how the Halloween festivities stay relevant: “You can celebrate it differently every year, so it never gets old,” she concluded.

2020 has surely thrown some big time curveballs. And if there’s something we can possibly forecast about the Halloween costume trends, it’s that there’s gonna be a lot of pop references and characters to choose from.

With coronavirus ravaging the globe, we've spent more time than ever soaking up the TV shows, drama, and social media lately. And it’s no secret that most Halloween costume trends are inspired by things we love to binge on, like Tiger King and Little Women. Other times, it’s something that made an impression in a not necessarily good way, like the GOT finale.

The costumes are also likely to be inspired by bold and funny characters like Lars and Sigrit from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

#14 I Decided To Be Brave!

For this Halloween I decided to be brave, and just own the chemo head. Embracing the bald if you will, and I think it ended up pretty cool! All creds go to my bestie for painting me, she's got some serious skill! (Cyantivity on Instagram if anyone is interested).

But all predictions aside, the top searched 2020 Halloween costume on Google is Cobra Kai, which references the 1984 film The Karate Kid. The top ranking can be attributed to the Cobra Kai series that aired on Netflix about the original characters 34 years later.

Whatever you decide to go for this Halloween, you can always dress up in the comfort of your home and go DIY-fueled bananas. I mean, take some crazy pics, and unless you’re on trick-or-treat duty, stay inside for some horror movies, Zoom calls, or card games with your family.
